Zombieland stars Woody Harrelson (Natural Born Killers), Jesse Eisenberg (Adventureland), Emma Stone (Superbad) and Abigail Breslin (Little Miss Sunshine). The movie follows our main character Columbus trying to make his way to his home town in Ohio. Along the way he meets the zombie killing maniac Tallahassee who’s one goal is to find the holy grail of the apocalypse, a delicious Twinkie. Soon after they meet up with Wichita and Little Rock, two sisters heading for a supposed promise land know as Pacific Playland. It follows the four on their journey west and the many run ins with zombies along the way, including a very great cameo. Either they learn to trust each other and work together or fall to the army of zombies populating the world.
Zombieland had me at hello, the trailer alone was enough to make me zombie crazy. Zombieland is one the best horror/comedy hybrids since Shaun of the Dead which was said to be the inspiration for the movie. The action and dialog keep the movie flowing at a steady and entertaining pace so there was never a point where I felt like I was trekking over quicksand. The effects used in the movie are also great and complement the scene as opposed to taking away from them. The zombie makeup was gruesome despite the comedic feel of the movie and some were down right scary. Another thing I really liked was the blood splatter effects used when zombies got hit, shot or splattered, they didn’t cheap out on the effects at all. I also thought it was really creative how they came up with and presented the very detailed list of rules Columbus makes for The finale felt as if it could have been ripped from a final chapter of Left 4 Dead. It’s also easy to connect with these characters, whether it’s intentional or not, because in total we only really deal with four major people. The performances given by Woody, Jesse, Abigail and Emma all give great performances and each add that spark to each of their characters.
After seeing Zombieland in theaters I couldn’t wait for the DVD to be released so I could watch this over and over. Zombieland was initially written as a T.V. series so there’s a lot of the story still to tell. According to the writers the first half of the movie is the pilot and the second half would have been the second episode. Although the writers would still like for Zombieland to head to T.V. the studios want to keep it theatrical. Both the studio and the writers are both excited to get to work on a sequel so expect more news on that. So far there’s no information on the cast returning, a plot or a release date.
