Daybreakers is a new vampire movie written and directed by the Spierig Brothers. It takes place in the year 2019 and the world has been almost completely overrun by vampires. With the supply of human blood running out they are fighting for a way to survive. It star’s Ethan Hawke, Willem Dafoe, Jay Laga’aia, Sam Neil and Claudia Karvan.
Daybreakers brings back the vampire movie that actually kicks ass. Humans are on the brink of extinction and vampires are about to lose their one source of survival. If that isn’t enough there’s a third variable thrown in involving mutations. I don’t want to give too much away on that if you haven’t seen the movie though.
One thing I really enjoyed was the visual effects of the movie. Everything is clearly distinguished between light and dark. They also did a good job with making things look futuristic but not to sci-fi futuristic. The vampires eyes were also something that I found visually pleasing. There are certain scenes that make the eyes stand out and they look awesome.
As for the story, I think it’s a great take on the vampire mythology. The movie isn’t exactly after the new or old way of vampires but plays on the traditional vampire myth and adds its own flare to it. The actors also did a great job all around in making the story come to life. I found it surprising to see Willem Dafoe in this, but he did an awesome job. If you’re a huge vampire fan or not I’d say see this movie.
