I could only shake my head when I first read about the Poltergeist remake. I have so many mixed feelings when it comes to remakes and reboots, although I will admit I sometimes wind up loving the new installment. That was the case with Evil Dead and that was also the case with Friday the 13th when I first found out they were being remade. The funny thing is, I loved both of those remakes. They don’t really compare to the originals, but I think that’s the point. Even though they are remakes of older movies, they stand alone as their own separate entry into the franchise. I will say that I enjoy it more if the writers and directors add their own little changes to the story to make a little different. So after reading about this remake I was already starting to feel these doubts that the movie was going to be good. Poltergeist is such a great classic horror movie and it was one that, for some odd reason, I didn’t think would be on the remake chopping block. Then I forgot the movie was coming out for a while and fell behind on the news.
So I’m scrolling through my news feed on Facebook and what do I come across? The new Poltergeist trailer. I immediately laughed to myself and clicked the link. The first thing I noticed was that it was just an exact copy of the original film, not that it’s a bad thing. Not straying from the original story is probably a good idea since the writer doesn’t have a background in horror. It’s basically just an updated version for the fans of the movie and a modernized version for people who may have never seen the movie before.
I like that this trailer makes the movie seem a little more creepy than the original. The clown scene, for example, just makes me feel a lot more uncomfortable. The way it moves is just so much more chilling in this version. I’m looking forward to seeing how they did some of the other classic scenes from the movie. This may be another remake that makes my short list of remakes and reboots I enjoy.
