cloverfield

Eight years after the original Cloverfield, we have what seems to be a sequel or spin off coming in March. The movie was filmed and finished secretly and the trailer dropped during the premier of 13 Hours. J.J. Abrams, who is only producing this, said that this movie is a “Blood relative” of the Cloverfield universe. As always the trailer left me with a ton of questions, including just how much this movie is going to tie into the original?

Slashfilm.com had a great article about the possibility of them doing another viral marketing campaign for the movie. Some fans apparently got emails from the old Tagruato email address, which had an updated date in the signature at the bottom. They also talked about the Soda company Swamp Pop Soda and how they were selling packs of their soda with puzzle pieces like the one in the trailer.

Now back to the original question of how will this tie into the original? According to this  post on Reddit by Keylife23 , the movie was written under the name The Cellar  and filmed for Paramount Insurge before Paramount shut them down. Then in an effort to save an already completed film, Paramount brought in two writers for a re-edit and turned it into a story within the Cloverfield universe. Now this could all just be internet hear say, but it does explain the sudden appearance of an already completed film. The movie still looks like it’s going to be really good, don’t get me wrong, but I don’t want the Cloverfield  aspect of it to feel forced. I don’t want to leave the theater saying well that was a great movie that someone sprinkled Cloverfield tie ins all over.

Regardless, I’m psyched to see what this movie has to offer me. It’s high on my list of must see movies for 2016.
