Although this is a T.V. series I thought it would be fit to talk about on here because it’s creator J.J. Abrams is also working on movies. Although I intended the site to be strictly for movies, I may make exceptions for certain shows. Fringe is definitely one of those shows .
Fringe has a very X-Files feel to it but it brings its own flavor to the genre. It combines strange scientific events and experiments with mystery and suspense. The story follows Agent Olivia Dunham(Anna Torv) who under unforseen circumstances is forced to work with Dr. Walter Bishop(John Noble), an institutionalized scientist, against unexplained phenomenon. Along with Dr. Bishop is his son Peter Bishop(Joshua Jackson) who’s become his father’s guardian outside of the institution. All together they make up a small part of the FBI’s Fringe division, a sector that uses fringe science to solve the cases and follow “the pattern”.
Anna Torv comes across as a stubborn agent who’s always looking to go the extra distance on any case. John Noble and Joshua Jackson bring a lot of the comedy to the screen as they go back and forth with each other. John Nobles character Walter Bishop floats dangerously on the edge between reality and insanity. This of course brings many of the shows laughable moments. Joshua Jackson also has his moments being that his character is a bit of a smart ass. Together both actors bring a lot to the screen both individually and as a team. All together the cast does a great job with their parts and make it easy to get attached to these characters.
The shows fast paced and always keeps you guessing. I have to say it sucked me in just as fast as the first season of Lost. If you haven’t seen this show yet I suggest you go and rent it from Netflix or Blockbuster and see what your missing. If you’re an avid fan of J.J. Abrams and anything that may fall into the same genre as this show then just go out and buy the season because I think it’s worth it.
Fringe airs on the Fox network. It’s now in its second season, which will be ending in May, then it will be back in Fall 2010 for its third season. It’s first season is now available on DVD and Blu-Ray.
